How do you Find Your Dream Home?

Today’s real estate market is tough and is more competitive than ever. So how do you find your dream home in a market like this one? Let’s find out together.

The first thing you want to do is think about where you want to live. Are there any lifestyle changes coming in the future? This could be anything from potential job changes to new family members. Set expectations for what you will need from your new home not just now, but in the future as well. 

Second, you want to start a preliminary search. Use a website like Zillow or Redfin to get an idea of what you are looking for. Get familiar for the homes in the market in areas that you are looking at and make a list if that’s what you want!

Next you want to get pre-approved. Talk to a lender to see how much you get approved for, and take your own finances into account to make sure you don’t purchase more home than you can afford. Remember, just because you were approved for a 500,000$ home does not mean that you SHOULD get one at that price. This may mean having to be realistic if your dream home is not in your budget, or patient if it means building credit or saving some money.

Once you’ve been pre-approved, the next step is to find an agent. Do your research and interview multiple agents. You want to find one that puts you first and understands what you’re looking for and expecting. 

Share everything about your dream home and future hopes with them. Communication is KEY here. If your real estate agent doesn’t know what you want, they won’t be able to help guide you in the right direction.

Next you want to think about the other homes in your area and their value. This is an INVESTMENT afterall, and you want to make sure that your home continues to grow in value. Think about those potential lifestyle changes as well and what is in the area that will be important in two years, five years, or beyond. This means schools, gyms, parks and anything else that is of value to you.

The final step is to not get discouraged and keep looking! There are always more homes coming on to the market. It may take some time but everyone has a dream home waiting for them out there.
